Simple question:
If Microsoft Word can tell some text (like “http://www.microsoft.com/randomlink”) is a URL (and thereby automagically make it into a link), why can’t it avoid trying to spell check it?

Probably because the Spell Checker Team and the URL Creator Team aren’t the same and don’t talk much. That, and/or there’s no overarching UI designer(s) to enforce inconsistencies such as this.
Happens at my company all the time.
