Being a Proud Father
March 12th, 2006
I can’t help it. I’m very proud of my daughter, Ari. She works for the non-profit Music for America and is in charge of a text-messaging campaign called TXTVoter which will help concert goers register to vote using their cell phones. They’ve raised some serious donations for this program and have the support of Green Day, Moon Zappa, and Death Cab for Cutie.
See what CNet’s News.com wrote about the program.
Damn, I’m a proud dad.

Off topic: Are text message voter registrants really going to be very informed voters? You should be proud of your daughter, but I’m not sure if this concept is a victory for democracy or not.

After the last presidential election, I’m not sure the majority of voters are informed.

Green Day is going to help the situation? I’m not a fan of GW, but the more information we got about John Kerry, the more dubious his candidacy became.

Well, this is really a question for the MFA folks, but my understanding is, in a democracy, the more eligible participants that actually participate the better.
The young are often disenfranchised. Registering is the first step to empowerment. Empowerment is the next step to engagement. Engagement is the step to participation.
If Green Day can get kids to realize they can become part of the solution, then maybe we’ll have even better choices next time.
