Now Available: The Designer’s Guide to Web Applications
November 6th, 2006
On Friday we released a brand new report in our UIE Fundamentals Series. It’s called The Designer’s Guide to Web Applications, Part I: Structure and Flows.
Download a Free Chapter of The Designer’s Guide to Web Applications here.
We’re really excited about this report. One of our most popular conference speakers, Hagan Rivers (who is giving a full-day tutorial at the Web App Summit in Monterey this January) has distilled some of her vast knowledge of web applications into this easy-to-read report. Some of the topics she covers are:
- How to build your application’s structure diagram. Hagan will explain how to use structure diagrams as shorthand for visualizing your designs. Structure diagrams help you communicate your application’s structure with your team members and to help everyone focus on the key parts of the design.
- How to identify the two basic forms of application structure: Hubs and Interviews. The two most common structures found in web apps, Hubs and Interviews are essential components in your toolkit. You’ll get a comprehensive introduction to these two components, with several examples showing you when to use each type of structure.
- Which design elements to use. Hagan will show you where and when to use tabs, menus, breadcrumbs, links, and titles in your application. She’ll go over the strengths and drawbacks of each element.
- How to build your application’s Command Architecture. When you design the organization of an application, you’re building a command architecture, a hierarchy of hubs and interviews reflecting each command in your application. Hagan will show you how to build your architecture, step-by-step.
If you’re just getting into web apps or are working on improving the design of an existing one, Hagan’s report will prove invaluable. And don’t forget to check out the free chapter
