Moll on Realignment versus Redesign
April 5th, 2007
I had the good fortune to attend the An Event Apart Boston conference recently, which featured a murderer’s row of designers and CSS gurus. One of the excellent presentations was from our friend Cameron Moll.
Cameron touched upon a theme that others at the conference also touched upon: designing is about solving problems, not solely aesthetics. Cameron referred to a section of his 2005 article “Good Designers Redesign, Great Designers Realign” to illustrate his. He says the traditional web designer might approach a redesign with this mindset:
“It’s been 2 years since our last redesign. Our current stuff just looks old.”
But a designer with a broader mindset would look at the same problem in this manner:
“Market trends have shifted. Should our website be adjusted accordingly? Our users’ needs have changed. Do we need to adapt?”
We couldn’t agree more, and we happy to see it’s catching on.
