Solicitors Are Welcome
July 16th, 2007
At UIE, we do few things like everyone else.
Everyone else puts up a sign saying how they don’t want solicitors to randomly walk into their offices and sell them stuff.
But not us.
We like solicitors. In fact, we tell them so in a sign we’ve put outside our offices:

Here’s what the sign says:

So far, a few solicitors have wandered in, fairly confused. A couple have brought gifts. Not an iPod or a Prius, mind you. A can of cashews and a baguette. Not what we were expecting, but a good start.
Today, one came in asking for a copy of the sign. They didn’t actually solicit anything, except the sign. I printed it off and they left.
I guess that’s progress.

I like politeness of this sign……
Also, is iPod a little bit outdated? iPhone probably?

I had a very confused idea of what was going on here - but then I realised you were using a different meaning of “solictor” than the usual UK one. From Merriam-Webster:
Solicitor (noun): (2) a British lawyer who advises clients, represents them in the lower courts, and prepares cases for barristers to try in higher courts
I had this vision that in the US, bands of lawyers roamed the streets, randomly knocking on doors and trying to sell stuff!

Heck, I could use this for my house for all of the salespeople/religious groups that come by!

Ha ha! Me too, thanks for the clarification.
That sign reminds me of Robin Miller’s email terms of use.

I had to laugh at the image of Robin’s comment - lawyers randomly roaming the streets! Ha ha ha!

OMG that’s hilarious! The guy who took the sign is probably making a career change, you should charge for the sign.

Maybe to some solicitors, a baguette or some toast is expensive.
