A note on this recording: We experience audio issues early on. After Jared introduces Lou, he doesn't begin his presentation for about 50 seconds. We're going to see if we can edit that out, but we didn't want to let it delay access to the seminar.
Create a better user experience by analyzing semantic data your organization already owns!
Your site's search engine produces all sorts of useful information. Spending time with your site's query data—data that is semantically rich—will help you answer questions about your users' behavior and intent. Your likely to learn some unanticipated lessons about your site.
The result? More usable content, improved search engine performance, as well as better navigation and metadata. Your users will achieve more on your site. Youíll sell more, engage more, and reduce frustration.
Once users exhaust their chase for the word or phrase that's in their head, they turn to your search engine. Here, the usersí behavior leaves a trail of data. Itís data that is specific to your site. If you know how to take advantage of it, you can improve their experience. Your site visitors teach you about links they cannot locate, and on what pages they expect to find them.
In this seminar, Lou Rosenfeld, who helped establish the field of information architecture, will show you how to take advantage of your site's query data, data that's sitting on your server right now. He'll also show you that time, money, and other resources donít necessarily need to deter you from using it to your, and your usersí, advantage. Youíll be left with concrete ways to improve your users' experience.
With a treasure trove of information already in hand, tapping into better performance for your search engine is closer than you think. And weíve got just the person to show you how. Later this year, Lou will release his book, Search Analytics. You'll have insight from an industry thought leader, on the very topic he's been spending lots of time thinking about.
Louis Rosenfeld is one of the most recognized professionals in the world of user experience design. He's an independent information architecture consultant and founder of Rosenfeld Media, a user experience publishing house. Lou has published past UIE Virtual Seminar speakers like Luke Wroblewski, Indi Young, and Todd Zaki Warfel.
Lou has been instrumental in helping establish the field of information architecture, and in articulating the role and value of librarianship within the field. He's worked with such organizations as PayPal, AT&T, Caterpillar, Ford, Microsoft and the CDC to make their own information easier to find. Plan to learn some of what they currently employ in their own site search analytics.
He is co-author of Information Architecture for the World Wide Web, considered the bible of the field (you know it, it's the Polar Bear Book he wrote with Peter Morville!), and is a regular contributor to Web Review, Internet World, and CIO magazines.
